Why is Physical AI developing now?
← Return to the report · page 5All explanations
Several developments are converging. None makes reliable real-world performance automatic.
01 / Machines can interpret more kinds of information
Vision-language-action research connects camera images, language instructions and robot movements. Google DeepMind presents Gemini Robotics as one example of this approach. Research progress is evidence of new capabilities, not proof that every workplace task is solved. [1]
02 / Training can combine different kinds of practice
Engineers use demonstrations, collected robot data and simulation to develop and evaluate skills. A simulation is a useful practice environment, but real objects, lighting and friction can behave differently. NIST studies data and measurement challenges that affect dependable performance. [2]
03 / Real workplaces provide a harder test
Factory pilots test integration, safety and repeated operation alongside existing processes. BMW describes early involvement from production IT, safety teams and logistics in its Figure pilot. That organizational work matters alongside the AI model. [5]
Why this matters
The opportunity is broader adaptability. The test is whether that adaptability produces safe, repeatable value outside the demonstration setting.
